The best thing to do is approach players near you who are at your level and active (being the same faction can be useful for some quests, but unnecessary for things like ruins). Joining a clan is also a good way to find allies; again, choose one with members near you. Avoid Templiers (it's the main bullying clan on the server, and disliked by most players), and you should be OK.
