Encyclopaedia

#1 Post by ATozz »

IMHO the encyclopaedia needs a bit of an overhaul.
The text should be made clearer and better structured, spelling and grammar needs to be looked at and overall more information needs to be added.
This is an example of what I mean but what I believe really needs to be done is to allow encyclopaedia registration so that players can contribute their knowledge
http://mlgame.co.uk/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=Buildings wrote: Cells in Cities, villages and other domains are intended for constructing buildings. Buildings can be constructed, upgraded, deleted or repaired in case they were damaged in course of enemy attack.

Construction, upgrade and repair cost resources and take time, and are performed by people who become Builders for the time of construction. The less a construction site is filled with Builders the longer the building construction/upgrade/repair will last.

After a building has been constructed the Builders move on to another constructing or upgrading building if there is one.

The same type of buildings looks different for each race. The Knights, Elves, Dark Elves (Drow) and Demons buildings are shown below:

Main Building and City Gate - special buildings that are in any city initially.

Most buildings can be upgraded to increase their specific properties and buildings that have sustained damage from an attack can be repaired.

All forms of construction work, apart from demolition, requires resources, time and builders.

Builders are automatically drafted from your idle population when you begin construction.
Each construction site requires a certain amount of builders, if the demand for builders isn't meet the work will progress at a reduced speed or not at all.
Once construction is done the builders will find another work site immediately or become idle population again.
Idle population are also drafted automatically into workers that operate production buildings once such a building is fully constructed.
When your population increases while there are vacant working places in your domain it is necessary to manually draft idle population into builders or workers, this is done using the two small buttons depicting a hammer(for workers) or a shovel(for builders).

Each of the four races has it's own unique architecture but they all have access to the same building types.

Irregular Verb - To Meet
Base Form: Meet
Past Simple: Met
Past Participle: Met

The encyclopedia is written by non-native-english-speakers. This engenders a text that is written in basic english and is understandable for everyone. If you write that workers will be drafted from the idle people, a large part of your readers will have difficulties to understand what you mean.

The main purpose of an encyclopedia is to transfer information. It's not meant to be a stylish and classy text. I agree that grammatical or vocabulary errors may be corrected, but the text itself should remain written in basic english.

Whether you write "meet" or "met", who cares? We all know what you mean :-)

just my 2 cents...

The overall goal must be to, by any means, explain game mechanics with as little room for misunderstandings as possible and in such a circumstance it is sometimes required that you use words that are more specific to leave no room for misunderstandings.

"Well, let's not start sucking each other's dicks quite yet." -Pulp Fiction

Once players are allowed to contribute to the encyclopaedia you can spend all your days ;) complaining about certain words or phrasings that you think are too complicated for the average player but right now I'd really appreciate if you could stay on topic.

You can indeed use words that are more specific, that's fine for the native-english-speakers. However, a large part of your readers has only basic english knowledge, and will very often not understand those words... What's the point of having a very specific and detailed text if you have to google-translate it every time?

And how am I going off-topic?

It's not about the language, it's about the fact that the "Encyclopaedia" isn't very good in it's current state. It's the only place where you can read about the game mechanics though a lot of it isn't covered and much of it is difficult to wrap your head around due to a poor translation from Russian to English, and you're even likely to learn more about the game from actual game experiences than from whatever you manage to decipher in the "Encyclopaedia". I just can't understand why the admin(s) won't allow anyone else to contribute and instead tries to do all the time consuming and boring work on their (his?) own. (Not sure if it's just one guy responsible for all of it)
