Re: looking for ruins
It's fairly random, though there are some parameters. The most important is that there's a maximum of seven ruins in any one kingdom; it's best, therefore, to avoid exploring in a kingdom where you've already found a lot of ruins of the wrong level for you. Remember, though, that your explorers will only find ruins from level one to the level above you; for example, if you're level two, your explorers will find ruins of levels one, two, and three. (The only exception is level-seven ruins -- anyone can find them.)
Every time a ruin is destroyed or decays, another one pops up somewhere; it's possible for a ruin to appear on a square that your explorer has just visited, and you won't see it until you explore again -- so (unless you know that a kingdom is already full of ruins), you should re-explore kingdoms regularly.

Well since we're on the topic of looking for those places outside your city, does anybody know how often outer domains will appear in a kingdom?
Just wanted to ask since I'm too lazy to be off exploring every square in my kingdom...
