The only ways of getting resources in the game are:

1. creating them (usually by building and upgrading the relevant buildings);
2. buying them from the market;
3. using scrolls that create varying quantities of a particular resource (but these are rare -- and can only be used when you have a hero).
4. stealing them -- usually from ruins. Stealing from other players is possible, but not as common in this game as in many others.

Attacking players
Attacking ruins
Attacking pits
Attacking mines
Attacking clan castles (not sure if they have other resources then gold...)

For Iron you must attack a mine...
