What exactly ARE catapault and ballista good for?

I just don't get it. Does anyone?
There really isn't any good explanation of WHY to use them anywhere that I have looked.

balista is like u bring tower to battle = mobile tower, to attack ur opponents

catapult is to reduce tower damage of ur opponent
