Missing Hero

My hero has gone astray. After sending out an attack on a ruin last night, I looked at the loss of troops and was surprised that I had forgotten to send my hero along (or did I?). My hero is not showing up in my cities. I checked the diplomatic corps to see if it was captured but - no - it say it isn't. I can't hire a new one as the game says I have one.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

No idea of why he ended up there but that was where he was hiding.
