How long they go on for?

Servers are never re-started.
Each new server is launched when previous server is close to be filled.

It really depends on what you mean by 'anything'. Remember, there is no server end, so even those who start on the first day have no chance of 'winning the server'. They like everyone else, can only grow as powerful as possible then try to maintain that position of power against any possible challengers, indefinitely. In that manner, it is very much a microcosm of the Russian mindset.

So, what you can do is entirely up to you. You cannot challenge those powers with several months of headstart, no. However there are still plenty of niches you can carve out for yourself, and given enough time, luck, and a good location, perhaps even become one of the powers yourself someday. On a server like this one, it does not matter if that takes years or even decades. This kind of server is dirt cheap to run, and is not going anywhere any time soon. You could feasibly play for ten years, running and hiding from the 'big guns', building your forces up in a disused section of the map ... only to eventually discover you are a big gun yourself.
