NOTE! Rank Rule doesn’t cover Mines and Pits. Any player can attack any rank Mines and Pits.

Well, no it wouldn't.
It means that as a 2* or 3* player you can also take over a 5* pit/mine if the owner is daft enough to leave it unguarded.
Really, your cities and your domains are down to you as an owner to protect them and not leave them unguarded. There is no building contents insurance in this game, so you have to put the protection in place yourself - counterspy and defence.
If the pit produces gold - what better defence than robbers/mercenaries style soldiers. OK OK they lose 50%, but they are best suited to production there and they are easy to reproduce.
Do unto others - go take over a level 5* - shove the defence and counterspy in - then have a laugh at the 2/3 * pit owners.
Cheers - Bumper.
